With proclamations of 2016 as the year of all flash storage, you may be tempted to think flash drives are the main consideration when choosing a storage array. However, a storage array has a variety of attributes that influence the purchasing decision, including a trusted brand, interoperability, availability, copy services and many others.

Cloud-readiness, or the array’s native ability to attach to cloud/object storage, is an attribute of storage arrays that is gaining prominence as part of the selection criteria. This is for a good reason, as cloud storage can balance the continuous need for on-premises and off-premises storage capacity with economics that make it viable.

It’s been mentioned on this blog before that unless you’ve been living under a rock the past few years, there’s no avoiding that cloud is coming. Cloud storage, cloud compute, cloud services and the word cloud is fast becoming a part of every IT solution on the market and will come to revolutionize the way organizations do business over the next 5-10 years.  EMC is preparing for these technology changes by integrating the cloud as a new tier of its more traditional enterprise storage solutions.CloudArrayBlog

Perhaps at the forefront of these technologies is the ever-growing cloud storage market. Object-based cloud storage solutions are gaining traction across organizations both large and small by providing scalable, affordable data storage. While this may seem like a worrisome trend to some, we see it as an opportunity and here’s why:

Cloud storage is filling a gap in the data storage market to meet growing demand for lower cost online storage options. As data volumes explode and regulatory requirements extend retention requirements, organizations are holding onto more information than ever before. In many cases, this data ends up filling up storage arrays or getting shipped offsite on magnetic tapes, but these options are inefficient and costly. (more…)

Since the announcement of TwinStrata’s acquisition last July we have been working hard on the first major release of CloudArray designed to EMC’s rigorous product standards.  Today, with the launch of EMC CloudArray 5.0, all the work pays off as we deliver an updated version of CloudArray that takes everything our customers know and love about CloudArray, adds new features, additional supported clouds and improves usability. A thoroughly updated user interface and a refreshed line of software and hardware appliances are the final touches in a revised CloudArray product that delivers higher levels of quality and performance than ever before.

Here’s a quick peek at what’s new:

  • Additional cloud provider support for EMC ViPR and ECS. These providers join the expansive list of cloud providers that CloudArray already supports. And as before, CloudArray users will have the ability to simultaneously support multiple clouds and easily migrate data between them. So whether customers are looking to use a public, private or hybrid cloud solution, CloudArray provides the connections they need.
  • A refreshed set of hardware appliances ranging from 12TB to 80TB of onboard, usable cache storage. CloudArray has refreshed its hardware appliance to better meet the needs of customers. This new generation of appliances features faster CPUs and bus architectures that enhance performance and improve throughput.
  • Usability improvements. In addition to hardware upgrades, this release of CloudArray also offers significant usability changes to improve customer experience. More robust network configuration tools support expanded network topologies that include proxy configurations. A new interface helps simplify certificate management. To make performance tuning a snap, a WAN/cloud performance optimizer now automates adjustments based on available bandwidth to the cloud.
  • A sleeker user interface. In addition to the appliance and performance enhancements, this release also includes an updated user interface that includes an easier rapid configurator and cleaner, more intuitive navigation

Despite these improvements, what hasn’t changed is CloudArray’s sophisticated caching capability and its rich feature set.  CloudArray continues to enable customers to take advantage of the scalability and affordability of object storage to save themselves both time and money. Local caching, physical and virtual form factors, and API translation, make CloudArray the perfect choice for customers looking to integrate public and private cloud storage into their existing infrastructure.

This release represents a cloud-integrated synergy that is the start of even deeper integration with the EMC product portfolio. As I said in a prior blog post,  the proliferation of CloudArray technology enables virtually any organization to enjoy the operational and economic benefits of a hybrid cloud storage strategy. Today, we have taken another step closer to that reality!
