The “Good” Ole Days

storage analytics 1In the old days, you could drive your car on the road without any knowledge if the car had any problems with the tires, the engine, the oil, or filters.  You were unaware to any of the potential problems that were lurking inside of the car’s mechanical systems.

I don’t think I’d call that “good”.

Today’s new cars have come a long way – loaded with intelligent systems and state-of-the-art technology.  You are alerted if the tire pressure is low, the engine is running at high temperatures, or if the oil needs to be changed.

This is better, and ultimately creates a safer and more responsive vehicle.

What if you could have a Check Engine Light for your VMware environment?

Storage Analytics 2What if we think about our infrastructure like a car for a minute and use the Check Engine Light analogy.

Wouldn’t it be nice to know if your FAST Cache is underutilized?  Wouldn’t it be nice to get an alert when your CPU utilization is too high?  What if you could understand when your databases are not running at optimal performance?

Well now, we can do that.

EMC and VMware Collaboration with vRealize Operations Manager: EMC Storage Analytics (ESA)

EMC and VMware have worked closely on many projects and products over the last decade.  One highlight is how EMC Storage capabilities can be rolled into the VMware’s vRealize Operations Manager dashboard using EMC’s Storage Analytics.

vRealize Operations Manager uses patented technology to learn and adapts to your environment so the system knows when something is wrong.

Let’s say every Monday morning for 6 weeks you run a heavy database workload which increases CPU usage. ESA knows this is typical behavior for this system workload; so the next time it sees there is light CPU usage on Monday morning it knows to alert the user. That sounds a lot like a “check engine light” to me!

EMC Storage Analytics supports several EMC platforms including VMAX2, VMAX3, VNX, VNXe, VPLEX and XtremIO. With the release of EMC Storage Analytics v3.2.1, introduced in June 2015, we introduced support for ScaleIO. We further enhanced and added new alerts for several platforms.
