Here at Dell EMC, we’re always trying to utilize the breadth of our product portfolio to maximize the synergies between products and deliver the best solutions for our customers. With market-leading storage and data protection options, ensuring that customers can use them together is critical to transforming the data center and getting the most out of their investment. One such product is Dell EMC ScaleIO, our software-defined block storage offering.

When we talk to customers, protection of ScaleIO data is always a hot topic. With six 9’s availability, ScaleIO provides excellent peace of mind for customers storing their most critical production data on the platform. However, there are some customers who want to go above and beyond and use data protection tools, such as replication, to provide multi-site business continuity in case of a disaster. Recently, there has been some great collaboration between our ScaleIO and RecoverPoint teams which we’re excited to share with you today.

On February 22, 2017 Dell EMC announced RecoverPoint 5.0.1 general availability. This announcement includes the release of a new RecoverPoint service pack which provides physical RecoverPoint appliance (RPA) support for ScaleIO 2.0.1. There are a ton of features in this release for ScaleIO which we are excited to share with you!

First, with this new integration we can not only provide ScaleIO / ScaleIO replication support, but also ScaleIO / VNX replication support. This is a game changer! It enables customers to use ScaleIO as a source and target cluster for ScaleIO AND VNX workloads, providing yet another way for customers to take advantage of the simplified storage lifecycle management and business value benefits of ScaleIO. It gets even more exciting as there are plans to incorporate other Dell EMC platforms into the mix!

Data Protection Everywhere: Data Domain Virtual Edition

We all know data protection is essential, not optional. Whether it’s in the cloud, on your physical storage or even in virtualized storage, your data needs to be protected. Fortunately, Dell EMC offers a data protection portfolio that’s equipped to deliver complete protection for enterprises of all sizes no matter where data lives or what happens in your data center. First in this blog series was a great overview of the Data Protection Suite Family, followed by a piece outlining the many benefits of Dell EMC Data Domain. Now, let’s move on to discuss software-defined data protection storage with Data Domain Virtual Edition which was introduced last year.

Data Domain Virtual Edition (DD VE) provides all the benefits of the #1 protection storage, Data Domain, in a software-defined solution. DD VE is simple, flexible and efficient, and best of all, easy to deploy and configure. So easy, in fact, that it can be up and running in just minutes. In its latest release, DD VE 3.0 expands on its core of remote and branch offices by adding even more flexibility that address additional pain points. The latest release of DD VE offers increased scalability and cloud support to address customers in the cloud and who have a converged infrastructure.

At its core, DD VE addresses businesses with Remote and Branch Offices. To address this, multiple DD VE instances can be deployed across remote offices for backup, and then replicate to a larger Data Domain system at a central data center for disaster recovery. With DD Replicator, which is included with DD VE, only unique data is transferred over WAN from DD VE to the Data Domain system at the disaster recovery site, which eliminates up to 99% of the bandwidth required to standard replication methods. Plus, bandwidth throttling allows you to schedule when data is sent over the WAN and limit the amount of bandwidth that can be used for replication, which improves resource utilization. Additionally, DD VE can efficiently protect small capacity workloads. This could be a small business or single department of a larger business that needs its own protection storage solution.

DD VE 3.0 supports Data Domain Cloud Tier, which enables customers to natively tier data to object storage in the public, private or hybrid cloud for long-term retention. Just like with Data Domain, only unique data is sent directly from DD VE to Dell EMC Elastic Cloud Storage (ECS), Virtustream Storage Cloud or 3rd party cloud providers. The long-term retention data now in the cloud is already deduplicated, which significantly reduces your storage footprint and network bandwidth for lower TCO. For further cloud-enablement, DD VE also supports secure multi-tenancy. This enables DD VE to be delivered as a service with the ability to logically isolate data between multiple tenants accessing a single DD VE instance.

The Perfect Holiday Cookie

What makes the perfect holiday cookie? Is it the combination of ingredients, or the manner in which they are mixed and baked? A recipe incorporates both of these things- yet data-protection-solution-holiday-cookies
the success of one without the other is never enough. Even with the main ingredients- flour, sugar, eggs-, a forgotten touch of salt or dash of vanilla leads to tasteless dough. And even if the dough is mixed to perfection, a misread oven temperature can ruin the entire baking process. (By now, you may have guessed that I am speaking from experience. I can’t be the only one who’s committed a baking blunder!) The result of these common mistakes is an imperfect holiday cookie.  Although this may not ruin your Christmas party, it surely isn’t ideal.

Fortunately for you, I won’t be baking any cookies this holiday season. However, I am thinking of mixing it up from a data protection perspective. When I think of the perfect data protection solution, I consider it a combination of both software and hardware products. Not only should data be backed up with the utmost speed, performance, and efficiency, but it should also be securely stored on protection storage you can trust. But like the ingredients of the cookie, there cannot be one without the other. In order to benefit from a complete data protection solution, the greatness of the backup application must be matched by the greatness of the protection storage device, and vice versa. And like the baking process, the data protection products must be handled with care, serviced appropriately, and backed by a company you can rely on. (more…)

Feeling Thankful for that Backup

Every year on the fourth Thursday of November, American businesses close down for the day as families gather around warm food on a big table. That means that many data centers were short-staffed over this past week, as IT employees around the country took part in our annual tradition of coming together to give thanks. But business in the data center must go on despite holidays, and those who work in IT know that any day off can be ruined when failures occur or disaster strikes.

When most go around the Thanksgiving dinner table and share what they are thankful for, stable health, friends, family and recent good fortunes are generally what comes to mind. But for those concerned about the loss of their organization’s mission critical data, this might have been the year that you declared to your family that you were “feeling thankful for that backup that saved me!”

That is right – intermixed with the stories that focused on golf scores that were lowered or new friendships that were made, there are definitely families out there who had members share tales about how having a trustworthy and complete data protection solution saved them this year.

Let me give you three scenarios where one would be thankful this time of year for backup. Take, for starters, a small business owner who deployed software-defined protection storage across multiple branch locations over this past year as their business grew. When an environmental catastrophe caused the destruction of one of these off-site locations, this individual was thankful that the location’s critical backup had been replicated to his central data center. This business owner was relieved that he had sought out a full protection strategy, of which disaster recovery is a vital component. (more…)

As Big Data starts to become (and has become) mission critical, there begins a growing need to protect it.

Businesses used to understand data as being structured or neatly organized in databases found within the enterprise.  But then, an emergence of new data started to spread, data is now being gathered from many diverse sources. Web logs, ecommerce transactions and demographic information left behind by customer interactions with a company became a useful source of data for corporations. This rapid growth of new data sources that is characterized by high volumes of growth, generated at high velocities, and include both these structured and unstructured data sources could be analyzed and used to better the business. For instance, Chrysler uses data gathered from their manufacturing floor, which is then used to help boost operational efficiency. All fortune 100 companies are using Big Data analytics, and with rapid technology adoption, projects are maturing faster than ever. This Big Data holds great value to businesses by allowing them to better understand their customers and gain a competitive edge, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to manage and protect.
