My name is Howard and I’m a marketing guy. There I said it! Admitting to it is the first step right?
Truth be known, I started “life” as a phone support guy then got promoted to Sales Engineer due to my good looks. That role dragged on far too long. Hanging out in data centers at 3am installing and troubleshooting ATM and Frame Relay gear got old; just like that technology.
When I’m not marketing tech stuff, I’m either playing with my own tech gear at home or travelling to some exotic destination with my incredible wife, Mary. Fifty/Fifty chance it’s a shopping or exotic beach destination next time you get my out-of-office message.
As we transition to a new year many people will make a resolution to do things better in life; to transform the way they live and interact in the world. Some get a new job to increase life satisfaction, to make more money or quite simply live a healthier lifestyle. As a legacy EMC employee, we, as a company are transitioning to Dell EMC for the better. And to do that, we must continue to operate flawlessly into 2017 and beyond for our customers. We here at Dell EMC also want to see. our customers flawlessly transform their data center for the better.
For our customers running VMAX 1 and VMAX 2 (10/20/40K) platforms, refreshing to a new VMAX All Flash delivers incredible operational and TCO benefits. We created VMAX All Flash to allow you run your business more effectively. Not only is it easy to purchase, migrate to and grow, but it’s so much simpler to manage. Add to that the cost savings in footprint and consolidation and a storage managers life couldn’t get much better.
Here’s a quick example of a customer that did a VMAX 20K refresh to a new VMAX 450F. This customer had a 9-Bay VMAX 20K with 800TB of usable capacity. We transformed them from a 9 rack VMAX 20K to a single bay/single floor tile VMAX 450F. This new model delivered 6x more performance, 87% less energy, 92% less footprint with a whopping 40% lower TCO.

As more data becomes available and people are able to interpret valuable metrics to make informed decisions, they are taking matters into their own hands in regards to self-service. Information is especially used today to be proactive on important matters. Take FitBit for example, a smart device that helps people be proactive on evaluating their health and take action on a daily basis. Did they take enough steps? Have they been getting enough sleep? There are even smart water bottles that remind you when to take another sip of water!
The automotive industry is another great example. A driver is not an expert technician but more of a generalist of what a car is and how to use it because the manufacturer makes it simple and can inform the driver of events. If only we took a look at the owner’s manual before our car battery died on us! By keeping track of car wear and tear, we can be proactive in avoiding that unintended sick day because our car needs a new catalytic converter.
Similar to situations in which a driver refers to the manufacturers’ manual to diagnose and be proactive on issues with their car, an IT generalist can use a tool that allows him or
her to proactively manage their Unity system. Proactive Assist is the built-in self-help desk in Unity Unisphere that offers essential resources like a collaborative chat forum, and important product documents, presentations, and how-to videos. It also allows IT generalists to order new parts, download the latest software, and shop for other Dell EMC products. That way IT generalists can solve issues more efficiently without spending time on the phone with customer service.

In this blog, I will cover a key strategic new addition to VMAX’s extensive database feature set called Database Storage Analyzer (DSA). This feature (some of you may have heard us call DB Classify) is integrated with Unisphere and allows database and storage administrators to have a view into storage using database objects. Its current capabilities allow for an unprecedented level of troubleshooting and diagnostics that can help avoid finger-pointing between database administrators and storage administrators. In subsequent generations, DSA hints will allow you to do much more.
In the rest of the blog, I will explain how DSA works and the key benefits it provides through three troubleshooting scenarios.
Introduction to DSA
DSA collects data from both the database and the storage. It runs as part of Unisphere for VMAX so any customer who runs Unisphere 8.0.0 with the new VMAX3 family or VMAX 10K, 20K or 40K has this functionality built in at no additional cost. Currently, DSA supports Oracle 10g and above; and support for Microsoft SQL server is expected later this year .
DSA collects data every five minutes using a “guest” user in the database, fetching data from Oracle dictionary tables (e.g. v$active_session_history). It also runs a lightweight process on the database server in order to map the Oracle files to the VMAX devices. DSA then correlates the key performance indicators (response time, IOs/s, MB/s and IO size) stored in Unisphere Performance Analyzer with the database files and objects. This correlated data easily allow identifying and troubleshooting performance issues. (more…)
